Deciding to relinquish a parrot is never easy. Whether it's a change in your health, home, family, or finances, or you simply recognize that your bird needs more than you're able to give right now, we want you to know: you are not alone, and there is no judgment here.
The Plumery exists to give parrots a second chance at a safe, enriched life — and that starts with making the relinquishment process as smooth, transparent, and compassionate as possible for both you and your bird.
Here's exactly what to expect.

Email Us Your Parrot's Details
The first step is emailing us at director@theplumery.org with some basic details about your parrot and your relinquishment circumstances. Please include current photos of your parrot(s) and the cage(s) they currently live in — this helps our team understand their situation before we take any next steps.

Submit a Relinquishment Form
Once we've connected, we'll send over our relinquishment form. This gives our team the information we need about your parrot's history, health, temperament, and needs so we can prepare for their arrival and set them up for success.

Complete Required Disease Testing
Before any parrot joins our flock, they must pass required disease testing. This protects the health of the resident birds already in our care as well as your own parrot during the transition.
You have two options for completing this testing:

Through The Plumery — We can coordinate the required testing for you. Cost typically ranges from $195–$300, depending on your parrot's species and whether any testing has already been done in the past.

Through your avian veterinarian — You're welcome to have your own avian vet complete the required panel. Based on what we've heard from others in the community, this route typically runs $1,000–$1,500 through a private vet.
Once your parrot's results come back clear, we move to scheduling.

Schedule Pickup or Drop-Off
With clear test results in hand, we'll work with you to schedule a day for either pickup or drop-off, whichever is easiest for you.

Before you finalize anything, we genuinely encourage you to schedule a visit to The Plumery. Come see our space, meet our team, and get a feel for the life your parrot will have with us. We think it helps for everyone — you'll leave with peace of mind, and we'll love the chance to meet you and hear your parrot's story firsthand.
